Art I is a course that is required before most other art courses. It is intended to give students an overview of additional art classes while learning the basics of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Students will develop abilities to better conceptualize, visualize, and execute to the final product. Students will also develop technical writing skills by reflecting on and critiquing their working process. Students will explore a variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional visual art techniques.
In Art I, students will read and analyze a wide range of artistic media, including utilizing vocabulary specific to two-dimensional and three-dimensional art. Students will apply various techniques through creative processes, facilitating a strong understanding of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.
There are six main categories that will be covered in Art I. These consist of Media & Techniques, Structure & Function, Symbolism & Ideas, History & Culture, Critique & Collaboration, and Art in Other Disciplines. Art I is a semester-long course offered to 9th-12th grade students.
